The Web: Net and Counternet
"If the TAZ is a nomad camp, then the Web
helps provide the epics, songs, genealogies
and legends of the tribe; it provides the
secret caravan routes and raiding trails
which make up the flowlines of tribal economy;
it even contains some of the very
roads they will follow, some of the very
dreams they will experience as signs and
portents."
Hakim Bey
The Net exists on Official Channels; it is manifested both in the privileged networks of the elite and in the public domain of mail routes, telephone lines, etc. The Net carries the routine and mundane information of business-as-usual necessary to keep the Consumer Daydream alive. We feed it, it feeds us, the endless sleep continues.
At radical angles to the Net lies the Web of Counternet.
The Web blends into the surrounding Net, masking itself in obscure poetry and a feral scent. The Web provides the backbone of the TAZ; it is the secret handshake of its Tribes, the Ark for its Secret Texts. The Web helps to both create and sustain the TAZ, acting as both medium and proxy.
The Web is Hi and Lo Tech. It is subway graffiti and xeroxed, crumbling manuscripts stapled to telephone poles as well the e-mail listserv and the shiny new, subversive website. The Web is the tool of both the Green and the Hacker, subverting technology even as it aids its spread to clandestine users.
The Web is the spellbook and science text of the TAZ. It creates Strange Attractors that facilitate the easy blending of real and unreal, blurring the line between prosthesis and interface, meat and cyberspace, spooks and solid matter. The Web makes possible the transition from slow death and the Mundane to life lived hand in hand with the Marvelous.
